a. slot 1 would have the new 4 GB stick, slot 2 and 3 would have the two 2 GB sticks
b. slot 1 would have one of the 2 GB sticks, slot 2 would have the new 4 GB, slot 3 would have the other 2 GB
c. slot 1 and 2 would have the two 2 GB sticks, slot 3 would have the new 4 GB
d. other suggestions? maybe use slot 4 perhaps?

A bunch of people are saying 'the performance is worse', but not explaining why. There are two main things that can happen that would affect performance. In general, two slots of the same colour are on different channels, and the way you've put it seems to be logical. Assuming the system supports a mix of dual channel and non dual channel ram, the two blue sticks are working in dual channel mode, and the stick in the black slot isn't.
